Stop Motion movie treasures

Here's some old pics that show the visual effects techniques from some of my favorite films:

This is a rear projection set up from Beast from Twenty Thousand Fathoms, one of my favorite Harryhausen films. On the left side of the picture you can see how the projection screen ends just next to the cop.

This is a great, sad photo. Some stop motion puppets from King Kong, Lost World and the unmade Creation film. The hand there is holding the head of the Brontosaurus from King Kong.

A great close up of the one and only, eight wonder of the world, Kong :)

 

This one's a little blurry, but you can see the Rhedosaurus puppet (the monster from Beast from 20,000) on a small stand next to a miniature building in front of what looks like a blown-up still foto of the New York location of the film, and of course the camera in the foreground. Ray harryhausen was the animator here, this is a rare treat...

 

Lastly, this is a test set up from a shot that was cut from Kong where he was going to jump across a street, rooftop to rooftop.

Man, they should have kept that shot in!

I just can't express how much these films meant to me as a kid, this was all before Star Wars and Indy, and it was magic to me.

Mountain Lions in the Hollywood Hills

As a native of Los Angeles, I'd always read about Cougars living on the edge of the city, but a wildlife photographer named Steve Winter finally set up a camera trap (which is better than a regular trap, I'm not a hunting guy) and photographed a Puma making it's way through the hills with the city below, in on the case of the first pic, the Hollywood sign in the background. I don't know him, and these images belong to him and National Geographic, but they are uber-cool and I thought I'd share them:

I've read where the pumas cross the empty freeways in the middle of the night.

They are not intruding, in my opinion.

Mike Hill and An American Werewolf in London

Mike hill is an amazing sculptor that creates original sculptures of old monster movie characters, and this piece is from An American Werewolf in London, my favorite movie of all time. The amazing this from this scene is that he created a figure for both David Naughton, who plays the werewolf, but also Rick Baker, the make up artist who created the make up effect in the movie. Just an incredible job:

This piece seems to run parallel with some of Hill's earlier work, which depicts the old Universal Monster movie characters with THEIR make up maestro, Jack Pierce, like thus:

Amazing work.

Age of Reptiles- The Body Tenontosaurus color notes

These are color notes from my short story The Body, explaining the transition of the animal after it dies.

I don't know how closely these were in the final story, but I like to provide as much info as possible for the colorist to work from.

Dino Gallery Live appearance!

I'll be appearing at Dino Gallery live, a one-day show at Creature Features in Burbank, CA on Saturday, February 1st! It's from 1 to 4 PM and I invite all five of you to come on out and see some dinos! I'll be selling my prints at a table in the store. Look forward to seeing you out there!

In case you were wondering, my Hidden Canyon print will premiere at the show.

When this movie came out I was such a Spielberg nerd, and well this movie really moved me.

Favorite '80's music videos- If you love somebody set them free by Sting

Sting's cool and I always loved this song. Some of the '80's video production values looked great back then...but not so much now. Still great song. Enjoy.

The Hidden Canyon print

I've been working on this print for years now, originally I drew the line art in 2001, and I've finally finished it and had some printed up. This piece reflects a lot of influences, and I'm gonna sell these at Comic Con and other convention appearances. I watermarked it because I think enough of it to only represent this piece as a high-quality print, available from Yours Truly.

 My favorite part are the fake scientific names, some are friends, colleagues, heroes and giants of the field of dino art.

Ancient Aliens- guilty pleasure

Okay, I must confess that this is my favorite TV show. I don't watch a lot of TV outside of sports, but this is one of my favorites. I know half of it is made-up, especially the Da Vinci/ alien connection episode, lol, but it's still a fun show:

This Georgio Tsokalos guy is AWESOME! I have to laugh out loud whenever he's on screen. He seems like a nice guy but crazier than a fruit bat, lol.

Cool show. Beats some of the real news of the world, if you know what I mean.
