My stupid Godzilla: Even better scans of lame drawings

For all five of you out there that care, here's even better scans of my lame, crummy drawings.

As an added bonus for somehow being interested in the mediocrity that is my art, below is a gaudy, silly painting I did to show director Jan Debont to get the gig of designing Godzilla which was one of the best experiences of my otherwise mediocre artistic career.

Boy, that painting sucks! And that Godzilla...what was I thinking??????

I like the sketches above okay, though.

No go do something far more worthwhile than looking at my horrible artwork on an autumn afternoon.

Fernando Valenzuela

I've been a Dodger fan all my life, and Fernando's my favorite Dodger of all time. Here he is throwing down in 1981, the year they won it all...

I grew up loving to look at old photos from World Series from the Thirties and Forties, and I can't believe I'm looking at an old black and white photo of games that happened when I was a kid.

My Gamera

Here's a version of Gamera done for G-Fan Magazine about a decade ago. Kudos to Brant Elliot for making this happen.

...and here's the line art. I don't think I colored this one, I think Brant arranged that, so I can't take credit for something I didn't do, but the dang turtle is mine, lol.

The Friday Afternoon Cartoon- Feline Frame Up

Directed by Chuck Jones. From 1954.

Return of the crummy drawing of the day, or "Oh no! Not another Mummy 3 chariot drawing?!"

Yep.

Haunted Mansion holiday Nightmare Before Christmas ride

All five of you know how much I love the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, and every year the Imagineers dress up the ride with a Nightmare before Christmas motif, and here it is.

Wal-e: Inside the Mothership

So, looking at the previous drawing, inside one of the 'rings' of the ship would be a view like this. I don't know why signage means something to me, but I grew up looking at large plastic cows, boys holding up hamburgers and lumberjacks carrying tires and other silly corporate symbols. I also wanted to try and create a different type of architecture, so I furthered the plantlife motif here.

I'm not even sure if I ever colored this drawing either.

Wal-e Mothership concept

I did this drawing VERY early on in the development of the picture. I chose an oblong, asymmetrical design based on plantlife, which is good because the ellipses are off here, lol.

Dinosaur Nerd Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, it's not really a dinosaur, it's an Amphibian from the Permian period called Diplocaulus.

Maui sub ride

I took my wife and kids on this about five years ago, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life...

OCTOBER SHADOWS IV

I'm going to be part of October Shadows, a Halloween art show put on by Creature Features, the coolest movie monster store in the world. Here's a video from last year's show. You can see my Sam Specter piece in there, and for some unfathomable reason, my name in the credits:

And here's a link to details on this year's show:

Surface (NBC) creatures

Surface was originally called Fathom, and I was hired by the Pate brothers, two nice men, and Michael Corenblith, who I had worked with before on both Apollo 13 and Alamo, to design some critters for the show. Here's a trailer of sorts:

And there's the creatures I designed. First an egg:

Then a seal. This was was rejected:

They liked this next one. I thought it was too cute.

This is the big beastie it grew into:

Wal-e: Scarab Truck

I actually did have pizza for lunch, and my stupid Dodgers got shut out yesterday.

Wal-e: Open truck

In an upset, I like this piece.

Wal-e: Monolith Truck

I'm happier with the drawing more than the color on this one. I'm a fan of clunky, utilitarian machinery.

Wal-e and Burger Girl

Under the category of 'who cares', I worked on this film really early and decided to put all kinds of signage gags in the images, and I think that's why you see that in the finished film.

I'm totally not happy with the backlighting in the distance.

Muppet's Wizard of Oz- Emerald City

I made the mistake of scanning in the sketch before I began to color this, and the piece suffers for it, but it works well enough. The preproduction time on this did not really allow for more than quick colored sketches, and the result is even more of a mediocrity than my art usually lowers itself to. The late Jean Giraud, AKA Moebius, was such an influence over me, and I feel like he's one of my artistic fathers, if that makes any sense, but the difference is that he was a genius and I'm a clown.

Note the Art Noveau influence here again, as well as my incompetence.

I'm thinking pizza for lunch.

Muppet's Wizard of Oz- Angle on Oz gate

I spent a few months on Muppet's Wizard of Oz in 2004, designing and storyboarding for a very nice man named Kirk Thatcher, who directed the picture. Always been a fan of Art Noveau, and began to incorporate it everywhere I could into my stupid drawings.

Beetle Recon Ship for Wal-e

This is my favorite of the lot, because the design is so much for for me. I actually like the design better than the actual sketch.

This was a week that I thought I would present a bunch of colored sketches as opposed to more polished, finished renderings, and these sketches are the horrible, half-formed result.

I had toast and juice for breakfast.

Pterosaur ship 2 for Wal-e

I actually dislike this drawing and color scheme very much. And the design is very stupid, like my blog.

Bug Recon Ship

This was early on, blue-sly exploration stuff for the film. I actually like the design much better than the actual drawing, if that makes any sense.

Dual Truck for Wal-e

I don't like most of my work but I'm okay with this one.

Pterosaur ship for Wal-e

I like that this is a one-legged ship, but the sketch, in retrospect, is too loose for my taste.

Wal-e loves pinatas

For those of you in Spain and the Americas, I don't know how to hit the ene key on my keyboard.

Mummy of the Day (from Peru)

I'm not talkin' 'bout movin' in/ And I don't wanna change your life/ But there's a warm wind blowing the stars around/ And I'd really love to see you tonight

England Dan and John Ford Coley

Ken Burn's Civil War

In case there was any doubt, I'm kinda interested in documentaries, and this one from Ken Burns is, in my opinion, incredible.

My childhood in a nutshell

Please, no emails telling me what's in baloney.

The many faces of Servant Prime

Soooo,

Servant Prime is the villain of my Dark Horse comic book Hieroglyph. It's a character that also appears in my novel Warhead, as well as the cover, although I don't make the direct link that it's the same character, perhaps the same species. Also a nice man named Joe K went to a great deal of trouble to make a miniature of the character, and so I'll share them with you now:

Here he (it) is as a single image, from the cover of Warhead.

Here it is from the cover of Hieroglyph.

Here it is from the miniature from Joe K. Thanks Joe!

Here's the cover of Warhead, with Ole' Prime there as well.

To be specific, Prime appears on the cover of Warhead, but in the novel a character called the Whisperer is the same species as Prime, if that makes sense!

Whew!

Some actual artwork

From Hieroglyph:

The Fraday Afternoon Cartoon Part Two- A yard too far

Okay, here's the real cartoon, lol.

Uhhh, this might not be a good one for younger kids...

Have a nice weekend.

The Friday afternoon Cartoon- The Schizoid Man

This week's episode of the Friday Afternoon Cartoon will feature an episode from one of my favorite series of all time, The Prisoner. Made in the late 1960's, there were only 16 episode made for this show, which is about a spy who is held captive in a mysterious, surreal village until he reveals why he resigned.

Here you go:

Star Trek Genius Poker scene

I was kicked off the set while they shot this scene.

Acrocanthrosaurus skeleton

One of my favorite dinosaurs right now, and the star of my Age of Reptiles short story, The Body.

I thought this was a cool poster

Cool test

If you don't know who this is, then go away.

Trailers for movies you should see: Back to the Future

This is still one of my favorite films of all time.

Tomb Raider- Chinese Tomb

So here's another one.
I liked drawing this, enjoy anything with ancient architecture.

Who cares?
